Day 3 - Roncesvalles to Zubiri (Downhill to Zubirir)

Today was a relatively easy day's walk; 21km from Roncesvalles to Zubiri with an overall drop in elevation to 520m above sea level. Most of the walk was along rocky pathways through forests, which made it pleasant but difficult as walking downhill on rocks is not fun. Now have sore shins.

Once again we set off at 7:30am and we were all done by 12:30pm.

Unfortunately Zubiri is a town which appears to be devoid of soul and character and there has been nothing to do but wash, drink beer, read our books and watch the other walkers struggle in.

A lot of walkers today are walking on to the next village as the accommodation here, at Zubiri, is full as a result of overflow from the festival in Pamplona. This makes it doubly difficult as the accommodation is booked out at Pamplona and the neighbouring towns and therefore a lot of walkers need to bypass Pamplona and surrounding towns totally (or sleep in the parks). We pre-booked all of our accommodation (for the 36 nights) and therefore we are fine.

Temperature today was very hot and a lot of walkers were very sun-burnt.

Tomorrow we walk to Pamplona. We will try to leave and arrive early so that we can spend time at the festival in the afternoon. The official start to the nine-day festival was today at noon and the first bulls run tomorrow at 8:00am. Our hotel in Zubiri is full of big drinking runners dressed in their traditional red and white.

We have met a lot of nice and interesting people from many parts of the world. A lot of father/son walkers.
