Day 4 - Zubiri to Pamplona (Run (or walk slowly) with the bulls)

Zubiri to Pamplona plus plus.

What a long day.

We thought today was to be a light, relatively flat walk of 21km. That was not to be.

There was a small error in the map (or the way we were looking at it) and in fact we had to walk 28km.

No biggy, but it was 38 degrees plus and most of the day was in the open. Further, we had to swim against the tide of the masses of festival goers who were quite merry after a night and a morning of heavy alcohol consumption and a few heady moments running from a herd of 600kg bulls.

Having realized our mistake on the mileage early this morning we set a target of 5 km per hour for the day and were able to keep to this for the first 15 km.

This and the fact that the track included a lot of short uphill and downhill runs ensured that the respiration system worked at full capacity.

Overall we took 6.5 hours, which we were happy with as the pace was very slow through Pamplona.

Our hotel (a Marriott) today has air conditioning which is an absolute pleasure after the hot sun. Vicki also got to have a hot bath.

The scenery is changing and we are starting to see a lot more crop lands and less forests.

We are yet to find a really nice bed so far on the trip and having checked what this hotel has to offer, it is no different.

We are yet to find a laundry. This has been Ok till now but sometime soon matters will get desperate. Alternatively we could do a 35-day field test to prove that the New Zealand made Icebreaker merino shirts and socks do not get smelly with continued use.

Lots of people with huge blisters - huge! And really bad sunburn.

Tomorrow is a short walk of less than 20km. That will bring us to a total of 95km. Only 705km to go after that.
